Ultra exciting: marathon on run on the Lycian Way, the second of turkey`s first ultra marathons has ended.
The Lycian Way Ultra Marathon (LYUM) started at Fethiye Kayakoy with 27 individual and 12 corporate runners. The marathon, which covers a close to 240-kilometer portion of the 509-kilometer Ancient Lycian Way, ended at the ancient city of Phaselis near Antalya. Athletes contended with difficult natural conditions in the race, which was run a leg a day for six days. In first place this year was Mustafa Kiziltas with a total time of 31 hours 29 minutes and 42 seconds.
Running on the slogan Running to Change Diabetes, the Dane Soeren Kruse Lilleoere, who has competed in the Lycian Way Ultra Marathon for two years, proved that even a diabetic can take part. Runners seeking to draw attention to social responsibility issues ran for a variety of causes. Turkish national athlete Kemal Ozdemir, nicknamed Running Man, ran to lend support to the reforestation activities of the TEMA Foundation, while Cenk Kasim Turan ran on behalf of the Community Volunteers Foundation (TOG).
Alper Dalkilic meanwhile ran on behalf of the Turkish Environmental and Woodlands Protection Society (TURQEK) on the slogan “Giving Life to Anatolia”, the aim of which is two thousand trees, and Aylin Savaci Armador competed on behalf of the Spinal Cord Paralytics Association of Turkey on the slogan “six wheelchairs in six days”.
Realized with the support of the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism and organization by Argos Culture Art, the third Lycian Way Ultra Marathon is slated to be run in the last week of September of next year.
